1887 Hamilton, ON, Winter Carnival Souvenir Medallion
Hamilton's first Winter Carnival was held in February of 1887. Featuring parades, decorated sleighs, fireworks shows, and toboggan slides and lit by electric lights, the goal was to attract tourists and establish Hamilton in their minds as Canada's industrial heart. A large arch, decorated with evergreen boughs, read "I Advance -- Commerce, Prudence, Industry," and the Hamilton Street Railway passed right underneath. In all, 25,000 people attended and, by all accounts, had a great time.
This token was purchased as a souvenir of the event, featuring images of fun in the snow on the reverse.
