Hawaii 1883 1/4 Dollar EF-AU (EF45) Toned
By 1883, most of the coinage circulating in Hawaii was American. To encourage a sense of national identity, King Kal?kaua authorized the production of coins unique to the island kingdom. Struck in 1883, these are now called Kal?kaua coinage and feature a right-facing bust of the king on the obverse. The reverse shows a quartered shield, with stripes representing the eight inhabited islands of Hawaii, and two symbols of kapu, ancient laws and norms of the Hawaiian Islands.
