Bohemia 1619 Bohemian Revolt Kuttenberg 24 Kreuzer VF (VF20)

In 1617, Emperor Matthias of the Holy Roman Empire named Ferdinand of Styria the next King of Bohemia. Ferdinand, who was a devout Catholic, immediately revoked the religious freedoms that Protestant Bohemians had enjoyed under their previous monarchs. When negotiations failed, armed rebellion broke out, igniting a conflict that would eventually snowball into one of the most vicious wars in European history, the Thirty Years' War.

This 1619 coin was minted towards the beginning of the conflict, shortly after the Defenestration of Prague, wherein two Catholic officials from the Habsburg court were flung out of the windows of Prague Castle. It marks the end of the relative independence Bohemia enjoyed under the Holy Roman Empire; that privilege would end with the start of the Thirty Years' War. The obverse displays a crown, with lettering that reads "Moneta Regni Bohemiae," or "Money of the Kingdom of Bohemia." The reverse shows the Bohemian lion, with text reading "In Deo Fortitudo," or "In God I Find My Strength."
