The portrait on the South African rand is of Jan van Riebeeck, Dutch merchant and Commander of the Cape from 1652 to 1662. His job was to build up Dutch colonial settlement on the tip of South Africa. He founded the future Cape Town in April of 1652 as a waystation for the Dutch East India Company, which was making regular trips between the Netherlands and the East Indies around the Cape of Good Hope. The Cape was (and is) notoriously treacherous for seafarers, so a port where Dutch ships could shelter and resupply was needed. Van Riebeeck worked with the indigenous Khoi people to establish crops and livestock, and even started a vineyard to produce red wine, which prevented scurvy. To this day, his legacy is significant in South Africa.
