Papal States 1834 IVR Gregory XVI 30 Baiocchi Extra Fine (EF40) Heavy
Gregory XVI was Pope from 1831 to 1846 and was the last Pope to govern the Papal States for the whole duration of his pontificate. Unusually, Gregory was not a bishop when he was elected -- he was a cardinal, chosen for his staunch conservatism in a time when the Papal States were under attack from radical Italian unification efforts. This 1834 coin is made from .900 silver and weighs just over 8 grams. "IVR" combines Gregory's pontifical year (4) with the mint mark "R" for Rome.
