Liberia 1862 Cent (DOD)
Located on the west coast of Africa, Liberia began as a project of the American Colonization Society to encourage Black Americans to emigrate to Africa. Between 1822 and the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, about 15,000 people took them up on it: mostly freed and free-born African-Americans, but some Afro-Caribbeans as well. Liberia declared independence in 1847, but the United States did not recognize it until 1862.
In 1862, to commemorate the formal recognition of Liberia, these one-cent coins were struck by the United States Mint.
