In 1707, Hungary was embroiled in Rákóczi's War of Independence, a nearly decade-long war that saw a large group of noblemen and wealthy progressives attempt to eject the Habsburg monarchy. Starting in 1703, Count Francis II Rákóczi and his supporters saw that the body of the Habsburg forces was occupied by the War of the Spanish Succession and took the opportunity to stage several uprisings. Though ultimately unsuccessful, the war did preserve Hungary's parliament and keep it somewhat independent from the rest of the Habsburg empire.
