DC-24b 1923 Dominion 25 cent Shinplaster Hyndman-Saunders, No Authorized, Circ

Due to a shortage of circulating coins during the 19th century, banks began to issue low-denomination paper currency to help fill in the gaps where coins usually would be used, like the 25-cent note. The term shinplaster came into use during the American Revolutionary War as a piece of paper that soldiers used to put in their boots to cushion their shins, and as low denomination notes were perceived as almost worthless compared to hard currencies such as gold or silver, the 25-cent notes probably came to be known by this term for this reason.
