c.1960s USSR Moscow St. Basil's Cathedral Copper Desktop Plaque
Located in Moscow, the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed (aka Saint Basil's Cathedral) is a Russian Orthodox church that has since been converted into a museum. Built by Tsar Ivan IV ("the Terrible") between 1555 and 1561, it commemorates victory over the Siege of Kazan and the conquest of the Astrakhan Khanate. Saint Basil's replaced a series of eight chapels circling a ninth, central chapel dedicated to the Intercession, and the nine distinctive onion domes that the building sports today each correspond to one of these chapels. In 1928, the cathedral was seized from the Russian Orthodox community as part of the Soviet state atheism program and converted into the State Historical Museum. Today, it is still a museum -- but weekly services have since resumed.
Souvenir desktop plaques like this one were popular Soviet souvenirs throughout the 1960s and '70s. Generally, they measure about 6x7 cm and are made of base metal -- this one seems to be copper. No stand or hanging apparatus is included.
