NASA Apollo XIII Commemorative Copper Token
On April 11, 1970, Apollo XIII launched from Kennedy Space Center with the intent of being the third crewed mission to the Moon. Two days into the mission, an oxygen tank in the service module exploded, disabling the electrical and life support systems. The crew, limping along on the Apollo Lunar Module's backup support system, managed to slingshot around the moon and return safely to Earth on April 17. It was a remarkable story of survival that could have very easily ended in tragedy.
This commemorative copper token honours the crew of Apollo XIII: Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise. The reverse design features portraits of all three men with the descent of the crew module into the ocean. The obverse shows the Apollo XIII logo.
