NASA In Memory of Challenger Crew Members Bronze Medal in Case (some wear)
On January 28, 1986, the O-ring seals on the Space Shuttle Challenger failed 73 seconds into its launch. The craft broke apart and careened into the Atlantic Ocean at terminal velocity, killing all seven crew members. One of those crew members, unfortunately, was schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe, who was aboard as part of the Teacher in Space Project launched by NASA. This meant that the flight was being broadcast live to classrooms across America, and the nation reeled with grief and trauma. Since the accident, the Challenger disaster has been used as a case study for engineering safety, the ethics of whistleblowing, and the dangers of groupthink.
This memorial token honours the lives of the seven crew members of Challenger. The obverse features the shuttle in flight, with the names of the crew and the date of the disaster. The reverse reads, "In memory of Challenger's 7 crew members, 'reaching for the stars.'" The token comes in its original cardboard holder and plastic sleeve.
