Pair of 1970 Japan Expo '70 100 Yen Souvenir Coins in Cases, 2pcs
Expo '70 -- more formally known as the Japan World Exposition -- was held in Osaka, Japan from March to September of 1970. It was the first World's Fair held in Asia, and its theme was "Progress and Harmony for Mankind." The Expo saw the premiere of the first-ever IMAX film, the Canadian-produced Tiger Child, and featured some of the earliest mobile phones. It also saw the debut of conveyor belt sushi!
These 100-yen coins were minted as souvenirs of the Expo. The obverse is an homage to Hokusai's woodblock print Red Fuji (also known as Fine Wind, Clear Morning), whilst the reverse shows the Expo logo. Minted from cupronickel, each coin comes encased in a braded Expo '70 case from the Mint Bureau of Japan.
