Released by the South African Mint, this beautiful fractional silver set includes four sterling silver coins: two-ounce, one-ounce, half-ounce, and quarter-ounce. One of a yearly release dedicated to the diverse fauna of South Africa, the 2006 set spotlights the black-backed jackal. Dismissed as a "dish-licker" -- i.e. a scavenger -- in Kipling's The Jungle Book, the jackal is actually an adaptable survivor, often following lions to snatch food from their kills. This relationship manifests in South African folklore, where the jackal is a trickster who often outsmarts and betrays the lion -- a bit like the fox in Western lore.
