The red dragon has been a symbol of Wales for centuries, but it was not until the 1950s that the design was standardized for use in the Royal Badge and national flag. The dragon then made its way into coinage, where it commonly represents Wales in series of four-coin sets celebrating the constituent parts of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.
