When early Europeans arrived in North America, they found shaggy, horned creatures of incredible strength. Lacking any other name for them, the Europeans likened them to African buffalo. In reality, this hairy North American beast -- now called the bison -- was a different species entirely, but "buffalo" remains a historically and culturally important term nevertheless.

This 2005 set includes eight "buffalo" coins featuring the American bison, all variations of either the five-cent piece or the Kansas state quarter. One regular coin, one fully coloured, one gold-plated, and one holographic version of each comes encased in an attractive, themed plastic holder. A fabulous little novelty item for anyone interested in American history or numismatics.
