1975 Drumheller, AB, Coal City Dinosaur Dollar Trade Token

Dinosaur Dollars are novelty souvenir trade tokens issued by the town of Drumheller, Alberta. Located in the Red Deer River valley, Drumheller calls itself the Dinosaur Capital of Canada for the abundance of dinosaur fossils discovered nearby. The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, Alberta's most popular museum attraction, is located in Drumheller and contains Canada's largest collection of dinosaur fossils.

Dinosaur Dollars usually feature some aspect of Drumheller culture on the reverse side. This one pays tribute to the town's coal mining history. Mining operations began in 1911 under Samuel Drumheller, for whom the town was named when it incorporated in 1913. Coal remained Drumheller's largest industry until the Second World War, when focus shifted to natural gas and oil. Naturally, Drumheller's status as a paleontology hot spot and its heritage as a mining town are closely linked.
