Vintage California Series: Alcatraz, San Francisco Medallion in Original Case (wear)
One of the novelty "California Series," this souvenir token features Alcatraz Island, home of the infamous Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Built atop a 19th-century fort, Alcatraz was converted into a prison in 1934. Because of its location on a rocky island in the middle of San Francisco Bay, it was believed to be inescapable, and so it accumulated a rogues' gallery of some of America's most infamous criminals. Some of these include Al Capone, Bumpy Johnson, "Creepy" Alvin Karpis, Mickey Cohen, and George "Machine Gun Kelly" Barnes.
This base metal token comes in its original plastic packaging. It features a bird's-eye view of the island on the reverse, and California Series branding on the obverse. Please note, the case exhibits some scratches and scuffs.
