This handsome, gold-plated medallion honours the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Called the Great War until the outbreak of World War II, this was one of the bloodiest events in human history. Between mass war crimes, genocide, and massive leaps in weapons technology that shredded battlefields, an estimated 15 to 22 million people died. Further exacerbating the problem was the interconnected nature of imperial colonialism, dragging just about every continent into the fray. The Great War ended on November 11, 1918.
This token features a biplane, an infantry squad, and a tank atop a British flag. On the reverse, a soldier stands at a grave decorated with poppies, and some of the war's most important engagements: Versailles, Passchendaele, Verdun, Gallipoli, Marne, Jutland, Somme, Ypres, and Cambrai.
