United Kingdom 1977 Dover Castle Silver Jubilee Medallion (toning)
Located in Kent, Dover Castle competes with Windsor Castle for the title of "largest castle in England." Perched atop a strategic earthwork, Dover Castle has been a fortification since at least the Iron Age, possibly even predating the Roman invasion in 43 CE. The present-day castle began taking shape in the 12th century under Henry II, and it remained a site of strategic importance through the 19th century. Even during World War II, Dover Castle acted as a military command centre, air raid shelter, and hospital.
This nickel-silver medallion celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's 1977 Silver Jubilee spotlights Dover Castle, with an engraving of Henry II's Great Tower gracing the reverse. Please note, the coin exhibits some toning and spots.
