1921D USA Dime PCGS Certified Good (G4) Damage

The first American disme ("deem") was produced in conjunction with the Coinage Act of 1792 -- but it never made it to circulation. It wasn't until 1796 that the first dimes (now sans-"s") appeared, featuring the "Draped Bust" design that was used until 1807. Fast forward to 1916, and the Mercury dime was introduced. These iconic coins don't actually feature Mercury -- they feature Liberty, but her winged Phrygian cap makes her look a lot like Mercury, the Roman god of, among other things, commerce and finances. The object on the reverse is a fasces, a bundle of sticks, usually containing an axe, that has been used as a symbol of state authority since Roman times.
