Ireland 1823 Halfpenny Very Good (VG8) Corrosion
In 1823, Ireland was the impoverished backwater of the United Kingdom. Their self-governance had been stripped away when the 1801 Act of Union was passed, and the Catholic-majority country was soon crushed under the will of the Protestant minority. The fight for Catholic emancipation soon gained steam, and, in 1823, protestors organized into the Catholic Association. Led by lawyer Daniel O'Connell, the Catholic Association fought for reform in England, and eventually won the right for Catholics of both English and Irish descent to sit in Parliament.
