2024 Djibouti 200 Francs Anubis 3oz Silver Coin
Lord of the Sacred Land, He Who Is Upon the Mountain; Anubis, jackal god of funerary practices, was one of Ancient Egypt's preeminent deities. A god of funerals in a culture that put immense stock in caring for the dead, Anubis guarded (and still guards) Egyptian tombs in both sculptural and painted forms, depicted either as a black jackal or a human man with a jackal head. His dark colouring, sinister to modern eyes, signified life and renewal to Egyptians, and he is often shown gently leading the newly deceased by the hand to the afterlife. He performed the Weighing of the Heart ceremony, which determined the deceased's fate based on their good or evil deeds. He is also depicted tending to the dead, performing careful embalming rituals and tenderly supporting mummies through funerals and mourning.
Today, Anubis is one of the most recognizable icons of Ancient Egypt. Even those with the most rudimentary knowledge of ancient history tend to recognize him, with his narrow snout, pointed ears, and gold detailing. This beautiful 2024 3oz. pure silver coin depicts the jackal god in gorgeous high relief with antique finishing. He wears the names headdress and wesekh broad collar, symbolizing his divinity. The reverse displays Anubis performing the Weighing of the Heart, based on the depiction of the ceremony from Chapter 30B of the Book of the Dead. Anubis, crouched beneath the scales in the Hall of Truth, weighs the deceased's heart against the feather of Maat (truth). Should it weigh more than the feather, the deceased is found wicked and devoured by Ammut, the Devourer of the Dead. If it balances perfectly, the way to the afterlife is opened. This stunning collector coin comes in a black, magnetically sealed case, with both paper and downloadable certificates of authenticity.
