1936 Vancouver, BC, Golden Jubilee "Key to the City" Token
One of Canada's largest, most populous, and most diverse cities, Vancouver perches on the coast of British Columbia. Indigenous settlement began some 10,000 years ago, with Europeans arriving in 1867 to establish the town of Gastown. When the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived in 1886, the growing settlement was renamed in honour of George Vancouver, the 18th century Royal Navy officer who charted the northwestern Pacific Coast in the 1790s.
In 1936, Vancouver celebrated its 50th anniversary with a Golden Jubilee. This token, which features a "Key to the City" on the reverse, was minted to celebrate.
