1969 California Bicentennial Golden Land Medallion
In 1769, an expedition of Franciscan friars and Spanish soldiers arrived in the area now known as California. Their objective was twofold: first, to establish missions that would convert the large indigenous population to Christianity; and, second, to officially claim the area for the Spanish crown by means of permanent colonization. The first mission founded in California (and second overall; the first is in modern Mexico) was the Mission San Diego de Alcalá. It exists today in San Diego, though the original church was burned down in an act of colonial resistance by the local Kumeyaay people.
In 1969, California celebrated two hundred years since the foundation of its first permanent European settlement. This medallion was minted to commemorate the occasion. It depicts a bear on the obverse, and the reverse shows a meeting of the many groups that have forged California's modern identity. The medallion comes in its original box, with informational sheet. There is a sticker on the lid and some light wear along the edges.
