England 1695 William III Crown VF-EF (VF30)

William III of Orange and Mary II of England became joint monarchs in 1689 as a result of the Glorious Revolution. The Catholic king James II of England had alienated much of the political elite by promoting policies seen as favouring Catholicism and absolutist rule. In response, leading Protestant nobles invited William of Orange, a Dutch Protestant and husband of James’s Protestant daughter Mary, to intervene. James fled the country, and Parliament declared that he had effectively abdicated, offering the crown jointly to William and Mary under conditions set out in the Bill of Rights 1689, which limited royal power and strengthened parliamentary authority.

William III’s reign (1689–1702) was dominated by warfare and the consolidation of constitutional monarchy in Britain. Shortly after taking the throne, he became engaged in the Nine Years' War against Louis XIV of France, leading Britain into a major European coalition war. William was primarily focused on continental strategy, often spending time in the Netherlands, while Mary governed in his absence until her death in 1694. Despite early resistance in Scotland and Ireland from Jacobite supporters of James II, William secured key victories, including at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

His reign also saw major constitutional developments in England. The Bill of Rights established limits on royal authority, including restrictions on taxation without Parliament’s consent and the requirement for regular parliaments, laying the foundation for a constitutional monarchy. The period also saw the rise of modern party politics, with Whigs and Tories becoming increasingly defined political factions.

William’s later years were marked by continued conflict with France, culminating in the War of the Spanish Succession, which began shortly before his death in 1702. Although he and Mary left no surviving children, William’s reign firmly established the Protestant succession and significantly strengthened Parliament’s role in governance, shaping the future political structure of Britain.
