Austria 1665 Leopold I 3 Kreuzers Almost Uncirculated (AU50)
Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor (1640–1705) was a long-reigning emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and a central figure in late 17th-century European politics, known for his conflicts with both France and the Ottoman Empire. A member of the House of Habsburg, his reign also reflects the dynasty’s long-standing practice of close intermarriage to preserve power. This is particularly evident in his marriage to Margaret Theresa of Spain, who was both his niece and first cousin, illustrating the extreme degree of familial overlap common in Habsburg unions. Such repeated consanguineous marriages across generations are well documented and contributed to the hereditary health issues that became especially pronounced in the Spanish branch of the family. A resulting deformity such as what became known as the "Hapsburg Chin" can be seen on coins issued during Leopold I's reign.
Obverse: Laureate portrait of Leopold I facing right, with the denomination in in a frame below, and the legend around.
Reverse: A crowned double headed eagle with the Arms of Austria on a flat top shield, with the mint mark below, the legend around, and the crown divides the date.
Specifications:
Archduke: Leopold I (1657-1705)
Engraver: Andreas Cetto
Composition: Silver
Weight: 1.8 g
Diameter: 22 mm
Mint: Munze Osterreich, Vienna, Austria
