Ancient Rome 168 AD Marcus Aurelius Silver Denarius VF-EF (VF30)

Marcus Aurelius (121–180 CE) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 CE and is celebrated as both a philosopher and ruler, often called the “philosopher-king.” Sharing power first with Lucius Verus and later with his son Commodus, his reign was marked by nearly constant warfare, especially against Germanic tribes along the Danube frontier. Despite the turmoil, Marcus is best remembered for his Meditations, a series of personal writings that reflect his Stoic philosophy and commitment to duty, reason, and virtue. His leadership balanced military necessity with a deep sense of moral responsibility, making him one of Rome’s most admired emperors. His death in 180 CE marked the end of the Pax Romana and the beginning of more troubled times for the empire.

Obverse: Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius facing right, with the legend around.
Reverse: A draped Aequitas seated left on a low seat, holding scales in her right hand and a cornucopiae in her left hand, with the legend around.
