Ancient Rome 150 AD Fortuna Antoninus Pius Silver Denarius VF-EF (VF30)
Antoninus Pius (86–161 AD) was Roman Emperor from 138 to 161 and is remembered as one of the most peaceful and effective rulers of the Roman Empire. Adopted by his predecessor Hadrian, he secured the succession by in turn adopting Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. His reign was marked by stability, sound financial management, and a strong emphasis on law and administration rather than military expansion. Known for his sense of duty and piety—reflected in the title “Pius”—he maintained peace across much of the empire and left a prosperous and well-governed state at his death.
Obverse: Laureate and bearded head of Antoninus Pius facing right, with the legend around.
Reverse: A draped Fortuna standing facing right, holding a vertical rudder on a globe in her right hand, and a conucopia with the point turned away from her body, in her left hand, with the legend COS IIII (Consul Quartum - Consul for the fourth time) around.
