Ancient Rome Jan-July 69 AD Vitellius Copper AS Extra Fine (EF40) SCARCE!
Vitellius (Aulus Vitellius, r. AD 69) was one of the short-lived rulers during the chaotic Year of the Four Emperors. Proclaimed emperor by the Rhine legions, he marched on Rome and defeated Otho, but his reign was marked by excess and weak leadership. Ancient sources also claim that earlier in his life he arranged the death of his own son, Aulus Vitellius Petronianus, in order to gain access to his inheritance—an accusation that reflects his notoriously dark reputation. Later in 69, forces loyal to Vespasian seized Rome; Vitellius was captured and killed, and his remaining young son, Vitellius Germanicus, was also executed, underscoring the brutality of the civil war that ended his brief rule.
