Ancient Roman Republic 58 BC King Aretas/Camel M. Aemilius Scarus Silver Denarius Uncirculated (MS60)

The surrender of Aretas III in 63 BC marked a key moment in the expansion of Roman influence in the Near East. After becoming involved in regional conflicts, including disputes over Coele-Syria, Aretas faced the advancing forces of Pompey the Great, who was reorganizing the eastern provinces following his victories in the Third Mithridatic War. Rather than risk direct confrontation, Aretas chose to submit to Roman authority, reportedly paying tribute to secure his position. This surrender allowed the Nabataean Kingdom to remain intact as a client state, preserving a degree of autonomy while acknowledging the dominance of the Roman Republic in the region.

Obverse: Aretas of Nabataea kneeling facing right beside a camel, presenting an olive-branch.
Reverse: Jupiter in a quadriga heading to the left, brandishing a thunderbolt, with a scorpion below the horses.
