Ancient Judaea 135-104 BC Hasmoneans, John Hyrcanus I AE Prutah Extra Fine (EF40)

John Hyrcanus I (r. 134–104 BC) was a major ruler of the Hasmonean Kingdom in Judaea, and one of the most significant leaders of the dynasty. A son of Simon Thassi, he consolidated power after internal struggles and expanded Hasmonean territory through military campaigns, bringing regions such as Idumea and parts of Samaria under Jewish control. He also pursued policies of forced conversion in some conquered areas, significantly reshaping the demographic and religious landscape of Judaea. His reign strengthened the independence of the Hasmonean state from the declining Seleucid Empire, while also centralizing political and religious authority. Hyrcanus’ rule marked a high point in Hasmonean expansion before later internal conflicts weakened the dynasty.

Obverse: "Yehonatan the High Priest and Council of the Jews" in Paleo-Hebrew within a wreath.
Reverse: A splayed cornucopia adorned with ribbons, a pomegranate between horns, within a border of dots.
