Ancient Greece 220-168 BC Philip V Nympth/Prow Macedon Silver Tetrabol EF-AU (EF45)

Philip V of Macedon (r. 221–179 BC) was a dynamic but ultimately unsuccessful ruler who sought to restore the power of Macedon during the Hellenistic period. Early in his reign, he was involved in Greek affairs and conflicts such as the Social War, but he later turned his ambitions outward, allying with Hannibal during the Second Punic War in an effort to challenge the growing power of the Roman Republic. This brought him into direct conflict with Rome in the Macedonian Wars, culminating in his defeat at the Battle of Cynoscephalae, where Roman legions proved superior to the Macedonian phalanx. Forced to abandon his expansionist ambitions, Philip spent the remainder of his reign consolidating his kingdom under Roman oversight until his death towards the end of 179 BC. He was succeeded by his son Perseus, who ruled as the last king of Macedon.
