Ancient Greece 359-336 BC Apollo/Horseman Philip II Tetrachalkon Extra Fine (EF40)

Philip II of Macedon (382–336 BC) was one of the most transformative rulers of ancient Greece, reigning from 359 BC until his assassination in Aigai by one of his body guards, Pausanias of Orestis. Through military innovation—most notably the development of the Macedonian phalanx—and skilled diplomacy, he expanded Macedon into a dominant regional power. Philip subdued and unified much of the Greek world, culminating in his victory at the Battle of Chaeronea, which secured his leadership over Greece through the League of Corinth. His reign laid the foundation for the later conquests of his son, Alexander the Great.

Obverse: The head of Apollo facing right, his hair bound in a taenia (a headband, ribbon or fillet used to bind hair - not a tapeworm).
Reverse: A youth on a horse facing right, with the control mark below.
