Ancient Greece 369-338 BC Head of Persephone Lokris Opuntia Silver Quarter Stater VF-EF (VF30)

Locris Opuntia was a region of eastern central Greece inhabited by the Opuntian Locrians, named after their chief city, Opus. In the Archaic and Classical periods, it was a modest but strategically positioned state along key land and sea routes. The Opuntian Locrians participated in major Greek events, including the Persian Wars, where they contributed forces against the Persian invasion.

Throughout the 5th and 4th centuries BC, Locris Opuntia was often influenced by larger neighboring powers such as Thebes and later Macedon. Despite its relatively small size, the region maintained a distinct local identity and issued its own coinage, typically featuring Ajax, the legendary hero associated with Opus. In the Hellenistic period, it came under the control of successive hegemonies before eventually being absorbed into the expanding Roman Republic.

Obverse: The head of Persephone facing right, wearing a grain wreath and pendant earring.
Reverse: A nude Ajax advancing to the right, holding a sword in his right hand and a shield adorned with a serpent with his left, and a kantharos (an ancient Greek drinking cup) below.
