Ancient Greece 495-454 BC S1484 Alexander I Silver Tetrabol Very Fine (VF20)
Alexander I of Macedon (r. c. 498–454 BC), also known as Alexander I Philhellene, was king of Macedon during the turbulent era of the Greco-Persian Wars. Though formally a vassal of the Achaemenid Empire, he is remembered for secretly aiding the Greek city-states by passing along intelligence and offering support at key moments. His epithet “Philhellene” (“friend of the Greeks”) reflects his efforts to align Macedon culturally and politically with the wider Greek world. Alexander also worked to strengthen his kingdom’s position and prestige, laying important groundwork for the later rise of Macedon under his descendants, including Alexander the Great.
