Celtic Gaul 1st Century BC Aedui Silver Quinarius VF-EF (VF30)
The Aedui were one of the most prominent Celtic tribes in Gaul during the 1st century BC, occupying a strategic area in what is now central France. Known as early allies of the Roman Republic, they were granted the status of “brothers and kinsmen” by the Roman Senate. Despite this privileged relationship, their position was challenged by rival tribes such as the Arverni and Sequani, as well as by internal divisions. During the Gallic Wars, the Aedui initially supported Julius Caesar, though some factions later joined the revolt led by Vercingetorix in 52 BC, reflecting the complex and shifting loyalties of the period.
Obverse: Possibly incuse marks.
Reverse: A horse prancing left, legend around.
Specifications:
Issuer: Aedui (Gallia Celtica)
Composition: Silver
Weight: Approx. 1.8 g
Diameter: Approx. 15 mm
