Ancient Rome 42-43AD Claudius Constantia Copper AS F-VF (F15)

Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (10 BCE–54 CE), born Tiberius Claudius Drusus was the fourth Roman emperor, ruling from 41 to 54 CE after the assassination of Caligula. Often underestimated due to his physical disabilities and scholarly nature, Claudius proved to be an able and pragmatic ruler. He expanded the empire significantly, most famously through the conquest of Britain, and worked to improve Rome’s infrastructure with new roads, aqueducts, and harbor facilities. Claudius also reformed the legal system and gave greater representation to provincials in the Senate, strengthening imperial unity. Despite his accomplishments, his reign was marred by court intrigues and the influence of his ambitious wives and freedmen. He was eventually poisoned—likely by his wife Agrippina—paving the way for the rise of Nero.

Obverse: Bare head of Claudius facing left, with the legend around.
Reverse: A helmeted Constantia standing facing to the left, with right hand raised, and holding a sceptre in the left, with the legend around.
