Ancient Roman Republic 82-81 BC C. Annius, L. Fabius Silver Denarius EF-AU (EF45)
The silver denarius of Gaius Annius and Lucius Fabius Hispaniensis, struck around 82–81 BCE during the Roman Republic, is closely tied to the turbulent period of the civil wars involving Sulla. Issued in Spain, where Annius served as a proconsular governor, the coin reflects the authority of Roman commanders operating in the provinces. The obverse typically shows a diademed female figure, often identified as Anna Perenna, a deity associated with the cycle of the year, while the reverse features Victory driving a quadriga, symbolizing military success and legitimacy. Like many Republican denarii, it functioned as both currency and propaganda, reinforcing loyalty and power during a time of political upheaval.
Obverse: Bust of a diademed female, draped, with the legend around.
Reverse: Victoria in a quadriga galloping right, holding reins in her left hand and a palm branch in her right hand.
Specifications:
Composition: Silver
Weight: Approx. 3.8 g
Diameter: Approx. 21 mm
