Sikyon, located in the northern Peloponnese near Corinth, was an influential city-state in ancient Greece known for its contributions to art and politics. It prospered especially in the Archaic and Classical periods, gaining fame as a center of painting and sculpture, producing some of the most renowned artists of antiquity. Politically, Sikyon often shifted alliances, at times under Corinthian, Spartan, or Macedonian influence, but it maintained a distinct identity. The city also minted its own coinage, usually featuring the dove, a local symbol. Though eventually absorbed into the Achaean League and later the Roman sphere, Sikyon’s cultural achievements helped shape the artistic legacy of ancient Greece.
