Ancient Greece 400-380BC Larissa Thessaly Silver Drachm EF-AU (EF45)

In Greek mythology, Larissa was a nymph associated with the city of Larissa in Thessaly, from which the city took its name. She was the daughter of the river god Peneus, making her one of the many water nymphs tied to the rivers and springs of Greece. Larissa is best remembered in myth as the consort of Poseidon, with whom she bore three sons—Achaios, Phthios, and Pelasgus—figures connected with the early tribes of Greece. Her story reflects the way local nymphs were often woven into myths to explain the origins of peoples and places.

Obverse: The head of the nymph Larissa three-quarter facing, turned slightly left, wearing a necklace and hair band.
Reverse: A horse grazing facing to the left.
