Ancient Rome 69AD S2162 Otho Silver Denarius VF-EF (VF30)
Marcus Salvius Otho (32–69 CE) was the second emperor of the Year of the Four Emperors, ruling for 91 days from January to April 69 CE. Once a companion of Nero and later governor of Lusitania, he seized power after orchestrating the assassination of Galba, whom he had originally supported. Otho quickly gained favor with the Praetorian Guard and the Senate, but his position was challenged when Vitellius was proclaimed emperor by the legions in Germany. Despite initial success in battle, Otho’s forces were defeated at Bedriacum. Choosing to spare Rome further bloodshed, he took his own life after only three months on the throne. Though his reign was brief, Otho’s end was remembered as a rare act of dignity during a year of chaos.

Reverse: Securitas, draped and standing facing left, holding a wreath in her right hand and a sceptre in her left, with legend around.
