Servius Sulpicius Galba (3 BCE–69 CE) was the first emperor to rise after Nero’s death, ruling briefly from June 68 to January 69 CE during the chaotic Year of the Four Emperors. A seasoned military commander and former governor of Hispania, Galba was proclaimed emperor by his legions and accepted by the Senate as Nero’s successor. Though respected for his discipline and experience, his strict financial policies, refusal to reward the Praetorian Guard, and reliance on unpopular advisers quickly made him unpopular in Rome. Lacking strong support, he was overthrown and murdered in a coup led by Otho, one of his own allies. Galba’s short and troubled reign highlighted the growing influence of the army in choosing emperors and the instability that plagued the empire after Nero’s fall.
