Ancient Roman Republic C. Licinnius L.F. Macer Silver Denarius Extra Fine (EF40)
Licinius Macer was a Roman historian and politician of the 1st century BCE, belonging to the plebeian Licinia gens. He served as tribune of the plebs in 73 BCE and was known for advocating popular causes, including measures favoring the lower classes. As a historian, Macer wrote an Annales, a history of Rome that drew on earlier sources and family traditions, though only fragments survive today. His career ended in disgrace when, accused of extortion during his praetorship, he reportedly took his own life in 66 BCE. Despite his tragic downfall, his historical work contributed to preserving early Roman traditions and annalistic history.
Obverse: Bust of Apollo as seen from behind, with the head turned to the left and with a thunderbolt in his right hand, surrounded by a border of dots.
Reverse: Minerva in a quadriga, holding a shield and reins in her left hand, and a spear in her right hand, within a border of dots.
