Ancient Roman Republic 113-112BC Voting Scene P. Nerva Silver Denarius VF-EF (VF30)
Publius Licinius Nerva was a Roman politician and governor of Sicily in the late 2nd century BCE, best known for his role in the events leading to the Second Servile War (104–100 BCE). Initially sympathetic to the plight of enslaved people who sought freedom under a Senate decree, Nerva soon reversed his stance under pressure from powerful landowners. His failure to address the growing unrest and his mishandling of the crisis allowed a massive slave uprising to break out, which spread across Sicily and required years of brutal campaigning to suppress. Though not remembered as a strong leader, Nerva’s governorship highlights the tensions and injustices that fueled repeated slave revolts in the Roman Republic.
