Ptolemy II Philadelphus (reigned 283–246 BCE) was the second ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt and is remembered for greatly strengthening the kingdom’s wealth, culture, and influence. He expanded trade across the Mediterranean and Red Sea, developed a powerful navy, and invested in grand building projects. Ptolemy II is also credited with enriching the Library of Alexandria, making it a center of learning for the ancient world.
