Ancient Rome 80AD Rev. Minerva S 2674 Domitian Silver Denarius EF-AU (EF-45)

Domitian was Roman emperor from 81 to 96 AD, the last ruler of the Flavian dynasty and the younger son of Vespasian. His reign marked a period of strong centralized power, economic reform, and ambitious building projects across the empire. Domitian was an autocrat who styled himself as a divine ruler, often clashing with the Senate, which contributed to his lasting negative portrayal in ancient sources. Despite this, his administration brought relative stability, improved the empire’s finances, and strengthened the borders, particularly in Britain and along the Danube. He was also a patron of the arts and initiated a cultural revival. His rule ended abruptly when he was assassinated in a palace conspiracy in 96 AD, leading to the rise of the more Senate-friendly Nerva. While maligned by many ancient historians, modern scholarship often reevaluates Domitian as a capable—if authoritarian—leader who left a lasting mark on imperial Rome.

Obverse: The laureate head of Domitian facing right, legend around.
Reverse: Minerva standing facing left, holding a thunderbolt and a spear, with a shield at her side, and the legend around.
