Ancient Roman Republic 90BC Head of Apollo L. Calpurnius Piso Frugi Silver Denarius AU-UNC (AU-55)
Lucius Calpurnius Piso Frugi belonged to the gens Calpurnia, a prominent plebian family in Rome. The extensive variety of control marks on these coins suggests a large-scale production, possibly to fund military campaigns during the Social War (91–88 BC), a conflict between Rome and its Italian allies.
Obverse: The Laureate head of Apollo (the god of music, prophecy, and healing, symbolizes cultrual refinement and divine favour) facing right, with a control mark behind the head.
Reverse: A nude horseman galloping to the right, holding a palm branch (symbolizing victory) in his right hand and reins in his left, with the inscription below.
Specifications:
Composition: Silver
Weight: Approx. 4 g
Diameter: Approx 17 mm
Mint: Rome, Italy
