1858 Large Date RP3 Canada 5-cents AU-UNC (AU55)

Large Date RP3 Variety: When the decision was made to increase the font size of the date on the Province of Canada 5-cents from small to large, and so as to not cause the small date working dies to become obsolete, a large date four numeral gang punch was produced to overstamp the remaining small date working dies. With a new large date, this produced three large over small date varieties. The RP3 variety is indentifiable in the last 8 of "1858" by the primary 8 visible west of the secondary 9.

Victoria Portrait Obverse 1:
Strand of Hair Detail: Just to the right of the Queen's eye is a thick, truncated strand with two very thin strands rising to the brow.
Eye Detail: The upper eyelid is thin with little definition towards the corner of the eye. The lower lid loses definition approaching the corner.
Lips and Chin Detail: Protruding upper lip with a pronounced curl. The chin is round and smooth to the neck.
