The Doaktown Hoard: A Forgotten Treasure Unearthed

Hidden away for over a century, the Doaktown Hoard is one of Canada’s more intriguing numismatic discoveries. This remarkable collection originated from the humble offering plates of a small church in Doaktown, New Brunswick. For decades, parishioners unknowingly contributed to what would become a treasure trove of Canadian history.

Tucked into the church archives and long forgotten, the coins lay undisturbed for approximately 120 years—until their rediscovery in the 1990s within the original church building. The hoard revealed a stunning snapshot of 19th-century currency, with the majority of coins dated between 1858 and 1874.

Among the highlights were hundreds of silver five-cent pieces from 1870 and 1871—an unusually large concentration. These coins, remarkably preserved, ranged in condition from well-worn Very Good to dazzling Gem Uncirculated, making the find not just historically significant, but a dream for collectors.
