The coronation of King Edward VII in 1902 brought more than a new effigy to Canadian coinage: it signalled a generational shift. Replacing Queen Victoria’s long-familiar likeness, King Edward VII’s image embodied the promise of a new century—one shaped by the modernization and growth of the Edwardian era, which would lay the groundwork for Canada’s eventual coming of age.
The 2027 Pure Gold Fractional Set draws inspiration from Canada’s 1902 25- and 50-cent coins, which retained the maple wreath while introducing King Edward VII’s effigy and a new Imperial crown design. These historic elements are plated with platinum on the 1 oz. coin in this set, creating a stunning contrast and elevating a design that marked the dawn of the Edwardian era, dubbed the Gilded Age.

King Edward VII commissioned a new crown design for coinage marking his reign. Seen in this set, the Imperial or Tudor Crown introduced in 1902 remained in use until 1952, when Queen Elizabeth II chose a design resembling St. Edward’s Crown instead.
Platinum plating
The standout piece in this set, the 1 oz. coin is enhanced with selective platinum plating that adds a contrasting silver-white lustre to its historic design.
Double-dated
Each reverse is double-dated (“1902 2027”) to commemorate the 125th anniversary of King Edward VII’s coronation.
Historic effigy
Like the original issues from 1902, each coin’s obverse features the effigy of King Edward VII, accompanied by the Latin legend.
Inspired by the Canadian 25- and 50-cent coins issued in 1902, all four coins feature a maple wreath on the reverse, along with the Imperial Crown design introduced in 1902, while the double dates (“1902 2027”) commemorate the 125th anniversary of the coronation of King Edward VII. On the 1 oz. coin, platinum plating adds a contrasting silver-white lustre to these historic design elements, and to the royal portrait on the obverse. Each obverse features the crowned effigy of King Edward VII by George William De Saulles, as seen on Canadian coins issued in 1902, along with the Latin legend “EDWARDVS VII DEI GRATIA REX IMPERATOR” (“Edward the Seventh, King [and] Emperor by the Grace of God”).
